School heads in Nyamira county are now calling on the county and national government to assist them with lightning arresters to curb the loses witnessed during the rainy seasons.
According to Ramba Primary school head teacher Patrick Onyambu, there are many properties and lives which have been lost during the rainy season caused by lightening and they fear for the lives of the students.
He was speaking at Sironga Girls on Sunday where there Nyamira county school heads were in a meeting to discuss safety management in schools.
“We are in the highlands and at risk and the government should ensure the arresters are brought on time to safe lives,” he added.
The incident comes after one of the dairy farmers from Ramba village lost four of his dairy cattle worth over Sh200, 000 when lightning struck after heavy rains in the area.
During an interview with the farmer on Sunday Mr Emannuel Mosiria pointed out that they are now living in fear due to frequent lightning.
“People are living in fear because they don’t know where it will strike when a heavy down pour occurs and we are appealing to the two governments to assist with lightening arresters,” he said.
The residents claimed that for the last ten years, over 1,000 heads of cattle had been killed by the lightning and over 10,000 dairy cows were in danger of being wiped out.
