Swimming is an enjoyable sport for most people but others take it as a joke not knowing it has its’ own negative consequences, at times.
Speaking on Wednesday morning at Kibera DC market, Allan Mituo, who was a star swimmer in his school in 2000, said swimming should be encouraged in schools.
Mituo who still takes swimming as his hobby said it is an exciting game but needs a lot of practice. He said it is easy to tell if your child will be a good swimmer or not. If a child back in the village loves to swim then that’s a natural swimmer. He, however, says some schools have swimming pools but the pool attendants have little knowledge of swimming.
‘‘Some students take swimming for fun and will wait until the swimming pool attendant is not around to jump in not knowing that they can drown if they do not know how to swim,’’ he said.
He advised all swimming pool attendants to always sit at the pool area and teach students on how to swim since some can drown during their first experience.
This comes after one student in Friends School Kamusinga drowned as he was doing his practice in the swimming pool. The form one student had been chosen to represent the school in swimming competitions that were set for next month.
