Nyamira Senator Mong’are Okongo has urged the government to crack the whip on schools heads who violate the gazetted fee policy.

Speaking on Monday at Chepilat township, Mong’are said some schools heads were imposing fees on parents secretly without the knowledge of Education ministry and called upon the government to take action against them.

“I am a huge supporter of education and we are pretty aware of schools heads that haven’t come to terms with the new reality. They are overcharging parents by coming up with a number of internal projects such as motivation to reap from them. I know of cases where children whose parents do not comply as shown exit door. This is the impunity we want ended,” he said.

Mong’are also blamed education officers for failing to take stiff action against the culprits and challenged the government to evaluate the performances of a number of education officers.

“Some education officers are not sincere with their work. They have always watched school heads charging irregular fee without taking an action. This is the time their work is evaluated and those found culpable of promoting the impunity dismissed,” he added.

Under the guidelines released by the government in March last year, parents are supposed to pay Sh53,554 for boarding schools, Sh9,374 for day schools and Sh37,210 for special needs schools while the government provides a subsidy of 12,870.
