A number of shoe shiners in Kisumu are counting huge returns from their businesses as the heavy rains continue to pound the Kisumu region.
Speaking to this Hivisasa writer, Jacob Ogolla based in Maseno said that the rains have benefited his business since they started as most people are forced to pass by them to get their shoes cleaned before getting to their destinations.
“Since the rains started, my profits have grown from the usual Kshs. 250 to Kshs. 800-1000 a day. Most of my customers are lecturers and working class people. Due to the poor state of our roads which are very muddy at the moment, they are forced to pass here for some cleaning and brushing of their shoes,” said Ogolla.
“I have steadily had huge returns during this season of the rains. I can now comfortably sustain my family which was hard during the dry seasons as I usually had low turn-out of customers. I at least make Kshs. 600 a day as opposed to Kshs. 200 on the earlier days,” said John Ouma, a shoe shiner based in Nyawita.
