A Nakuru legislator has faulted the residents for not fully supporting persons living with disabilities saying that they are people like any other who can make an impact in the society if given equal opportunities.

Speaking in his Bahati constituency on Wednesday where he donated food and clothing to more than 50 disabled families, area MP Kimani Ngunjiri regretted the fact that people living with disabilities were being forced to live in abject poverty because of being forgotten by the society.

According to Ngunjiri, such people needed care and empowerment to help them reach their full potential in life arguing that some had proved worthwhile in different sectors across the country.

“Ever since I became MP in Bahati, I have tried to inject my time and money in a disabled person’s project I initiated some time back to help empower them and ensure they become independent and self-reliant in life,” he noted.

The Bahati MP also appealed to the county government to fast track projects geared towards benefiting such people in the county so as to steer them clear of chains of poverty.

“Disability is not inability and the people in question need to be empowered by being given equal opportunities with other members of the society,” he advised.

According to statistics quoted by Ngunjiri, Bahati constituency has about 1,000 registered people living with disabilities but he vowed to do everything within his capacity to support them.
