The Child Welfare Society of Kenya (CWSK) on Thursday announced it has rescued 72 children in the past 10 months in Kiambu County.
CWSK Kiambu coordinator Henry Chege said that among those rescued were 15 minors who had been defiled and 4 babies abandoned between two and six months of age.
He also stated that 23 were street children who were taken to different children's homes in the county in an effort to reduce the number of street families.
"Most of these children were abandoned by their families as a result of poverty," he revealed.
Chege said that cases of defilement and rape were also a major reason as to why most girls ran away from home.
The Kiambu CWSK coordinator said that the number of street families and children was increasing in a very high rate raising alarm.
He also revealed a huge majority of the rescued children would not want to be reunited by their families as a result of what they faced before escaping.
"We have rescued 72 children in the past 10months and all of them are in different children's homes in Kiambu and well taken care of.
I want to appeal to parents and guardians to ensure they offer good parenting to curb the increased cases of street children," said Chege.
