An Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission official from Kisumu has called for tolerance among political leaders in Nyanza region to ease tension during voter registration, campaigns, election and post election periods.

George Oyugi, who is the regional election coordinator covering Kisumu, Siaya and Homa Bay, said that currently there is a lot of bile being spewed everywhere by politicians which can be dangerous in the near future.

“In the past we could see politicians share platforms irrespective of their political affiliations and sell the ideologies. This seem not to be happening in this era as politicians have resorted to hurling insults at each other and inciting Kenyans which may interfere with the August 8 elections,” he said.

Oyugi who was speaking in Kisumu during a forum meant to engage journalists on the issue of the on-going mass voter registration said politicians should come together and mobilize voters during this registration period so that they achieve the required 1.6 million targets.

Previously, the country has always turned volatile during the electioneering period, an issue the elections body is really trying to avoid.

Oyugi also asked journalists not to give politicians who want to incite people a platform to do so as that will help tame the vice.
