Students at Kisii University have urged county commissioner Mr Chege Mwangi to deploy more security officers to patrol their living estates outside the campus.
Speaking during an interview to this writer on Sunday, the students confessed they had experienced insecurity cases during their stay off campus.
The most suffered were first-year students who were admitted in September 2015.
"I have been exposed to many cases of insecurity while staying outside the campus. I once reported the matter to the university's security department but was told it was the role of the county government to provide security to those staying off campus," said Fredrick Koech, a third-year student.
The university earlier offered accommodation to its students but later delinked in April 2014 following a students rampage that led to destruction of the private hostels it had leased.
This resulted into most of the students renting houses off campus, but had concern with the rising insecurity in the premises.
In October this year, a suspect was lynched while stealing items from a students' hostel. Valuable items including laptops, mobile phones and money were some of the items taken away.
This, among other cases, has made students fear for their lives and call for more deployment of officers in Mwembe, Riverside and Nyamage estates to maintain safety.
