Kisumu County Students Union has asked all its members to register as voters ahead of 2017 polls.
The union’s Secretary General Fred Makajos said college and university students should ensure they acquire the voting card.
In a press statement, Mr Makajos decried low turn-out for the voter registration since the mass exercise started on February 15.
“We are appealing to all those who are eligible to come and register as voters to enable them vote leaders of their choice,” he said.
Mr Makajos said the students can only elect the President of their choice if all of them register and vote.
“My appeal to our members is that please register as voters. Let’s have the votes,” he said.
He added: “My fellow students, good leaders are elected through a vote by good citizens. That only happens when all adults acquire ID and register and vote.”
He said the union is working on the best strategy to remain strong and elect leaders who will ensure change in universities and colleges.
He told the students not to wait until the last day of registration.
He also decried over more than 10,000 uncollected identification cards and asked the applicants to collect them.
Mr Makajos attributed the voter apathy in the region to uncollected IDs and lack of proper sensitisation.
The secretary general urged leaders from Kisumu to be more involved in voter registration.
“Leaders need to engage the residents more and urge them to register to vote. Residents should know that acquiring IDs and registering as a voter is a right and not a favour,” he said.
He challenged governors, senators, MCAs and MPs in the region to mobilise residents to register as voters.
