Parents across Kisumu County with children suffering from mental disabilities have been asked to take them for treatment.
Monicah Okore, from African Foundation of mental health, said that many parents believe mental disabilities do not deserve medical attention which is not the case.
“Mental illness just like any other condition has curable and I urge parents to stop hiding their children and take them to facilities that can assist them,” Okore said.
Okore, who spoke to this writer on Tuesday, said that many children with bright future are being wasted away simply because parents believe that mental illness does not have a cure.
Okore added that traditional beliefs affiliated to mental illness are hampering access to treatment.
“I am appealing to our parents to visit hospitals and ensure that their children get medical attention because with time they will be fine,” said Okore.
Okore said inadequate facilities for people with mental illness has become an obstacle in accessing treatment for people with disabilities.
