Tea farmers in Kiambu County have been urged to adopt crop rotation in a bid to improve their produce and profits.
Gatundu North agricultural officer Jacob Latemo Monday said the move would help counter persistent dry spells experienced in the region, urging farmers to embrace the practice to realise change.
“Farmers should not rely on tea farming only to make money. Growing fruits like avocados and ribena would help increase returns," he said.
Latema said the county government is currently deliberating on lowering the cost of fertilizers in the region, to help farmers boost their produce.
He said the county is currently in talks with local tea investors to find ways of marketing tea abroad.
“We don't want farmers to experience crisis during dry seasons. That is why we are calling on farmers to change how they practice farming. We are currently having meetings with top directors in the tea industry as we seek ways of marketing our product in Germany and Singapore,” he said.
