Kisumu County Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) chairman Zablon Awange has urged teachers not to sign performance contract with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) until the union gives a go ahead.
Awange said the performance contract is a scheme by the commission to suppress teachers in the country.
He said teachers' unions were not involved in coming up with the performance contract.
The chairman said the unions must be incorporated to know what exactly the contracts entail.
“Union is there to look into the affairs of its members who are teachers. We are demanding that the union is consulted before the contract can be signed,” he said.
Speaking to the press in Kisumu on Monday, Awange said the union was cautious about the process and will not allow its members to sign the contracts before the issues are fully addressed.
He urged the commission not to victimise teachers who have not signed the contracts and allow the issues being raised by the union addressed.
Awange noted that the ministry of education through quality assurance has been gauging teachers on their performance and wondered the motive of the commission.
He urged the commission to come clear and engage the teachers’ union on why they feel that teachers should be put on performance contracting.
“We must know what is it all about the performance contracting, all these years the ministry of education has been evaluating the performance of teachers, why all of a sudden TSC is coming up with contract signing,” he asked.
