A weekend starts on Friday; many Nairobi residents will tell you that. As some of the born again sheep spend time in the presence of God, others who love partying will be busy in the clubs and pubs within the CBD.
Many will take three or four bottles of liquor and go home. They will drive while they are drunk. Drunk driving is an offence against the Kenyan law. This has caused deaths and left some people paralyzed. In Kenya, the government had to find a way to curb drunk driving. It introduced the alcoblow system where those who were found drunk while driving were fined. Quite a huge number of people lose their lives every year due to road accidents. Previous research findings indicate that at least 3,000 people die every year in Kenya through road accidents. Among these, 1,320 are pedestrians and most deaths are caused by drunk driving.
On Monday night former CMC director and a Nairobi businessman, Joel Kibe allegedly killed a guard on duty at Runda Estate. Kibe is believed to have been drunk. He, however, recorded a statement at Gigiri police station and is set to appear in court today.
This is just one incident where drunk driving has caused the life of an innocent person. Some cases go unreported since they are hit and run incidences.
