Police in Muhoroni have impounded a bhang estimated to be Sh1milion at Menara along the Muhoroni-Londiani highway.

The bhang was being transported in a Toyota corolla car to Nairobi from Busia on Wednesday.

Muhoroni police boss Muthuri Mwongera said the drug was seized concealed in five sacks and 1,040 rolls parked in the car.

He said three occupants of the impounded car fled after they were stopped by traffic police officers manning the Menara roadblock.

“When the officers stopped the suspects, they slowed down far away from the roadblock and escaped into a sugarcane plantation leaving the car in motion,” Mwongera said.

He said they have launched a manhunt for the three and they are following crucial leads that would lead to their arrest.

Mwongera said police are on the lookout and will continue to tighten the war on such illegal substances which he said are a detriment to the society.

He said they have reports that those who smuggle such illegal substances have now embarked on using matatu and motorcycles to transport the drugs.

Matatu operators should be on the lookout since they are also liable to prosecution if such substances are found in their vehicles, Mwongera said in a telephone interview.

He directed the officers to continue acting firmly against those peddling drugs in the region.

“Officers manning the borders and roadblocks must be vigilant to end the vice,” he said.
