Two people died on the spot while three others were seriously injured after a Nairobi bound car veered off the road near Mwongori trading center and rolled several times on Sunday.
The accident happened after another grisly road accident took place near Kisii Town in which five people died, leading to several questions about the safety of the roads within Kisii and Nyamira counties.
According to an eye witness, the driver of the car was trying to overtake a lorry but lost control.
“The car was been driven at a very high speed and the driver was trying to overtake a lorry only to lose control leading to the accident. It rolled several times and two people died on the spot. The rest were rescued by Chepilat police and taken to hospital,” said Priscah Nyaboke.
Chepilat police post’s Sgt Henry Odongo confirmed the accident and cautioned drivers against violating traffic rules, insisting that an operation was ongoing to deal with errant drivers.
“An accident took place a few meters from Chepilat Police check and killed two people on the spot. We managed to rescue three and they were taken to Tenwek Mission Hospital in Bomet. It’s high time our drivers respected traffic rules because initial investigations show that the driver was speeding,” he said.
He added: “There are at least two police checks between Nyansiongo and Chepilat but some drivers who are fond of violating traffic rules are using an escape route which we have identified. We will man the route and punish those who have developed the habit."
