Two people died on the spot Monday morning after a Kisii bound matatu veered off the road and rolled several times near Nyaera along Kisii-Nyamira highway.

Several other victims are fighting for their lives at the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital.

The accident is the third within a period of three weeks along the highway, which has now left eight people dead.

According to one of the survivors, Bill Omanga, the driver of the matatu was speeding at 140Kph, causing anxiety among on board passengers.

“He was driving at a high speed and I remember one of us complaining bitterly. We joined him in compelling the driver to reduce the speed but all was in vein. It’s after this that he was unable to control the vehicle in a sharp corner. I am lucky to have escaped unhurt,” he said.

Kisii OCPD Tom Mutisya who visited the site moments after the accident urged drivers to obey traffic rules.

He also pledged to increase surveillance along the road by deploying more traffic officers to curb reckless driving and accidents.

“It’s sad that this is the third time we are visiting this place because of an accident. It’s clear that the vehicle was unable to negotiate in the sharp corner probably because of what the survivor has said. Drivers should at all times obey traffic rules. However, soon we will add more police checks along the highway,” he said.
