Kiambu Ssenator Kimani Wamatangi has urged the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to sensitise Kenyans on the importance of registering as voters.

Speaking to journalists after attending a church service at ACK Kanyiriri church in Kabete on Sunday, Wamatangi said that IEBC has the responsibility to educate Kenyans on electoral matters.

He noted that most Kenyans are not aware of the electoral process and why they need to register as voters and take part in it.

He said that the electoral body has to reach out to people at the grassroots and ensure they take part in the electoral process.

“The electoral body needs to put in place proper measures that will see all eligible citizens sensitised on the voting processes and also registered as voters,” he said.

The senator said the mandate of the electoral body goes beyond overseeing elections, adding that they are mandated to oversee democracy.

At the same time, the Kiambu lawmaker appealed to youth who have not acquired Identification cards (IDs) to get them before the voter registration exercise commences next week.

Wamatangi said youth and residents can only use a voter’s card as a tool to elect leaders who will promote development and agitate for their rights.

IEBC is set to commence the voter registration exercise on Monday next week. The exercise is set to run for one month and targets over eight million new voters.
