Nyamira governor John Nyagarama has urged area residents to control the amount of cereals that they sell to the Cereals Board, arguing that the county was not producing enough.
Speaking at Riamanoti in Borabu on Tuesday, Mr. Nyagarama urged residents to control selling of the produce as a way of dealing with an impending hunger crisis in the region.
He urged parents who were engaging in the business to get money for school fee payment from relevant leadership offices that offer bursaries rather than ‘inviting’ a bigger problem in the near future.
“We have received news that some of you are selling cereals to the Cereal Board of Kenya. That is unacceptable because the county is not producing enough for all of us. We must stop it immediately and for those doing it to get money for school fee, we have bursaries offered in many offices that you should apply for consideration,” he said.
He said that the county government through the department of agriculture would soon initiate a project of purchasing the cereals from the residents to preserve them for future use.
“If it’s a must that you have to sell, then it’s important that you wait till the county government rolls out a project that will see us purchase the products from you for the future use,” he added.
The county boss also warned residents against working with cereals brokers from other parts of the country who were seizing the opportunity to exploit the farmers by purchasing their produce at a cheaper rate.
