With the 2017 general elections nearing, political temperatures are already rising in Kisumu.

Aspirants are declaring their interests in vying for various political positions.

But is it time to start politicking? I say no.

What Kisumu needs are leaders and not politicians. People who can develop the county, work with existing leaders to steer the county forward and take Kisumu to greater heights.

How many times have politicians failed to fulfill their promises to the electorate?

If you asked, my answer would definitely be countless times.

They simply engage in politics of promises and once elected, they vanish, do nothing only to come back after five years to start the cycle again.

I agree with Kisumu Central MP Ken Obura in his recent remarks that his re-election will depend on his track record.

Saying that he is not done fulfilling his promises to the people but then added that he is still working on them so that the people will re-elect him basing on his performance.

To me, only a leader and not just a politician would make such a statement.

In another occasion, Governor Jack Ranguma recently showed signs of fear by asking a Senator and MPs who have shown interest in the seat not to challenge him in his quest for being re-elected in the forthcoming general elections, arguing that most of them were just making noise.

I don't think this is the right time to speak of such issues as they are focusing more on politics and personal political gains as opposed to county leadership and development.

The governor should keep off politics and also just do his job right and the people would know whether he is fit for another term or not.
