The law of nature has it that survival is determined by how one can battle against harsh environments.
Human beings are not exception to this law and therefore owing to this fact, university students in Kenya have devised the following mechanisms of raising cash during times of economic hardships at campus.
Printing and photocopying services. It is very common to find students who own printers and photocopying machines in their halls of residents. The students offer printing, photocopying, scanning and type setting services to others at subsidised rates as a way of raising cash.
Fresh juice vending. The sounds of juice making blenders are very common in student rooms. Making and hawking such juices is mushrooming in many institutions of higher learning as a way of making a living. Such fresh made juices are sold at Sh20 a glass.
Sports betting. Sports betting sites like Sportspesa and M-Cheza have of-late been a source of income to most college students especially to the males. However, the ladies are also embracing the betting culture. Though not a reliable source of income since some student’s state of brokenness normally deteriorates after making wrong predictions.
Doing assignments for others. Some university students have discovered entrepreneurial opportunities out of the lazy chaps who find hard doing the commonly known as take away assignments. The lazy students can have their assignments done and submitted at a mutually agreed charge.
Deejays at parties. Students who have perfected their 'Disk Jockey' skills and are lucky enough to access a laptop and a small music system always find their skills very lucrative. Such students are always invited to play music at parties and bashes every weekend and at the end they are paid for their services.
Electronic repairs. University students own many electronic gadgets ranging from mobile phones, laptops, television sets, electric kettles to music systems. Most the time the electronic gadgets become faulty hence repairs needed. Students with such repair expertise and equipment needed to do such repairs get to do the jobs. The customers will always prefer to have their gadgets repaired by the fellow students as they charge friendly prices as compared to the other technicians.
Clothes, bags and shoe selling. Students also sell bags, shoes and clothes, some of those who are more established are even able to raise tuition fees for their studies. Hawking of the clothes and shoes is done along campus walkways and also room to room hawking.
