"Necessity is the mother of invention", this might not ring a bell in your head but to the thousands of Kenyan's living in the sprawling Kibera slum it surely does.

Kibera, always cramped and dirty is the last place you would want to suffer a medical emergency.

The narrow and squeezed paths make it impossible to evacuate the sick to hospital in case of a medical emergency. The situation gets even worse when it rains and the narrow paths become nearly impassable.

However, in the midst of all these challenges, Kibera residents have devised clever ways of getting their relatives, friends and neighbours to hospital in case of an emergency.

The Wheelbarrow ambulance is a basic idea that is saving lives in Africa's largest shanty town. They are fitted with battery powered sirens and some beddings to act as ambulances in emergencies.

The project sponsored by the European Union, AMREF and the government has seen community health workers save hundreds of lives mostly expectant mothers and robbery victims.

In an interview with CCTV late last year, Dr Walter Kibet who works at the AMREF Medical centre in Kibera, admitted that many lives have been saved by the wheelbarrow ambulance and the community health workers since the project launched.

"Sincerely speaking before these ambulance came on board, what we used to receive were dead bodies and we could not do much to help, people would die in their houses. That has now changed thanks to the wheelbarrow ambulances," he said
