Kenya National Examination Council, KNEC announced that almost half of the students who scored good grades in the last year's Kenya certificate of secondary education, KCSE examinations that were released on Thursday will miss university admission.
This is because our current public universities and private universities do not have the capacity to accommodate all of them.
What then will happen to those who will miss admission to universities? Will they wait till the next intake? Will they forget about their dream Bachelors degrees and join middle-level college to do diplomas and certificate courses?
This unfortunate scenario will hit those students from poor background most. While those from well-off families may even resort to international universities abroad, or overseas, those from poor families will have no option but to cut their dreams short.
They can not even afford the local private universities. Maybe they will have to hold on to their dreams by starting with diploma courses and then upgrade in future.
