Banana traders at Laini Saba Market in Kibera have a reason to smile as they record increased sales in ripe banana sales this January season.
There are an increased number of customers in the market.
During an interview with some traders at the market on Tuesday evening, many of them were happy that they are now making huge profits for every day sales.
Mama Rachael Auma said she is now receiving more customers than before.
"I have been increasing stock due to the increased number of customers. This is a clear sign that the dry season is approaching this first month of the year. The tough economic times mean that food is costly and so many prefer eating ripe bananas for lunch and taking some home for breakfast,” Auma said.
“I majorly deal with ripe banana only though I intend to diversify since sometimes the supply is inadequate,” she added.
Next to Auma is Rose Mwende who cooks githeri.
“The month of January sometimes becomes hard for many of us to afford food due to the many activities involved such as looking for school fees and many more. We are making good sales as many residents prefer eating ripe bananas for lunch to cut costs on hotel food,” Mwende added.
