A middle aged woman is nursing injuries in Kenyatta National Hospital after she was hit by a train in Ruiru on Tuesday.

Mary Wanjiku was hit by the train after trying to cross through the Ruiru railway. According to the Kenya Railways commandant Mr. Kirimi Ringera, the victim was driving across the railway heading to Membly estate on the day of the incident. He said that the woman had not noticed the oncoming train and therefore decided to drive through before she was caught up in the accident.

He also said that the officers from Ruiru police station rushed to the scene immediately they learnt about the incident and helped the woman who was trapped in the vehicle, rushing her to the hospital where she is currently receiving medical attention.

Ringera called upon the members of the public and motorists using the roads near railways to be keen before crossing over the rail as such accidents have been claiming lives due to carelessness of the victims.

He added that the railway is there to help ease the commuting challenges and not cause accidents and so the residents should ensure that it is safe before using the railway. He said that road safety measures also apply on the railway and that the commuters should have learnt from earlier incidences on how to behave while crossing or using trains.
