Uasin Gishu County Deputy Governor Daniel Chemno has urged all expectant women to avoid giving birth at home since it leads to deaths that could be prevented.
Speaking in his office on Wednesday, Chemno said that giving birth in a hospital guarantees safe delivery and complications can easily be dealt with by medical experts.
"I have received some information on expectant mothers losing their lives and children after bleeding and other complications which cannot be handled by traditional midwives. That is total negligence, such lives could not have been lost if they gave birth in hospitals," he said.
He said the county government has spent Sh108 million to construct 25 health facilities, nine new laboratories and maternity wing, and urged women to utilise the facilities.
"I urge all expectant women to take advantage of the improved health facilities by giving birth in the hospitals since its free and one is guaranteed quality service. This will reduce mortality rate by half," he said.
