Women in Nyamira County have been called upon to hold their husbands accountable in the sale of land to ensure the proceeds are not wasted.
Addressing a group of women on Tuesday at a Nyamira hotel, Maendeleo ya Wanawake Nyamira county official Wilkista Onsando challenged them to be more aggressive and know their rights as enshrined in the constitution, saying men take advantage of their ignorance to sell off land.
“If a family has to sell any piece of land for the right purpose, all the members should be brought on board and discuss how the money will benefit all family members,” she said.
She called on her fellow women to listen to radio programmes, including vernacular stations that enlighten them on their constitutional rights.
“For a long time women have been discriminated against in society because they don’t know what is rightfully theirs. They don’t know they have a right to stop any sale of land,” she said.
She observed that there was rampant sale of land in the county which is hindering development in the area, as men misuse the monies in bars and with prostitutes, leaving their legal wives and children suffering at home.
