The government has been challenged to speed up the vetting process of applicants seeking new national identity cards (IDs) in Nyamira County.
County women representative Alice Chae says slow vetting process had led to a big number of youths in the county being left out of the ongoing registration.
She now wants the local registration office to fast-track the vetting process of new applicants so that youths from the area could participate in the 2017 general elections.
The women rep made the remarks when she presided over a fund raiser for women groups in Nyamira Township on Monday evening.
“We want more people to register as voters, and so far there are many IDs which have not been released yet the applicants applied long time go,” she added.
Chae also observed that a number of elderly persons in the area did not have the vital identification document while others still possessed the old generation IDs.
She said this should serve as a lesson to those who have not registered, since it was only a few days remaining before the Independent Electoral and Boundaries commission closes the exercise on March 15.
