Kisii Senator Chris Obure has said the government has sole responsibility to implement development projects in all parts of the country regardless of the political affiliations of the residents.

Speaking at Mash Park Hotel on Saturday evening, Obure urged opposition MPs who were courting the government to desist from ‘begging’ for development and challenged the government to work in all regions without discrimination.

He said opposition is part of advancing democracy by giving residents alternatives in general elections, saying all its members should not be victimised for their political stand.

“I am worried that some MPs are always meeting State House officials to beg for development. It’s the sole responsibility of the government to work in all regions despite the political affiliations of the residents. The government should learn to work in opposition strongholds because opposition is party of advanced democracy. It’s a watchdog and keeps the government on toes,” he said.

Obure said multipartism should be respected in the country by the government and cautioned the Jubilee government for allegedly courting opposition MPs to support it.

“The government has the mandate to work for all of us. It’s absurd to see some MPs being invited by top state leaders in a bid to persuade them to support the government. It doesn’t work like that the MPs should learn to respect their parties,” he said.

He also urged the Jubilee leadership to make inroads in the region to ask for votes since the region was democratic hence ready to invite all aspiring leaders for top leadership.

“What I am trying to say let Jubilee work for people regardless of our parties. Our MPs don’t have to beg always and after all it’s through these projects that residents make choices. This is a democratic area that invites all leaders including my party boss (Raila Odinga) to campaign,” he said.

Kisii region overwhelmingly voted for the opposition, Cord, in 2013 polls.
