A youth group based in Kebirigo in Nyamira South sub-county is set to improve their productivity after they received improved goat breeds from a local nongovernmental organization.
Speaking in their Kebirigo firm today the chairperson to the youth group Denis Mbuya said they will ensure that they raise their earnings this year after being given eight Kenya Alpine goats.
“We appreciate the donation and we look forward to help other local farmers get more of this breeds to improve productivity,” he added.
While distributing the goats the Young Farmers Association Director Zephania Lukes said the goats will be used to cross breeds with the local goats to improve the breeds.
He said the Kenya Alpine goats were borrowed from the German Alpine breed and have been adapted to suit the Kenyan conditions has been seen as a move towards improving the goat milk farming which is slowly but steadily picking up in the country.
He said the goats sourced were from Murang’a County and they can produce four liters per day, two in the morning and two in the evening a significant improvement from the local breeds which produce less than a liter per day.
“Goat milk has high nutritional value and we want our farmers to enjoy it in plenty. We will soon begin artificial insemination for goats to boost our reproduction,” said Lukes.
