A section of leaders in the County Assembly want the county government to form a body to monitor whether youth, women and the persons with disability are being awarded 30 per cent of the county tenders.

Last week, Governor Jack Ranguma said his government takes pride in the youth as the future leaders of the country.

He said he would champion their sensitisation on enterprise development by taking advantage of 30 per cent of the Access to Government Procurement Opportunities (AGPO) and strategising for devolved functions.

But a section of MCAs have questioned the implementation of the 30 per cent requirement, claiming many youth in the county have been denied tenders which instead go to people above 35 years.

Nominated MCA Lydia Odhiambo who represents youth in the County Assembly said many of them have been complaining a lot about being denied tenders.

“The youth claim many of the tenders go for the old guys who can bribe their way as they miss the opportunity. Some even hide in the guise of young people to get the tenders,” said Ms Odhiambo.

She said that there was a need for measures to be put in place to ensure that youth get an equal opportunity when it comes to awarding of tenders in the county.

Ms Odhiambo said it is only through tenders that the youth can be empowered economically.
