Nyamira youths have been challenged to lead the war against illicit drugs to help curb its rampant spread among the young generation.
Speaking at Borabu on Sunday during a tournament organised by local leadership to show solidarity in fight against drug abuse, Nominated Senator Daisy Nyongesa challenged youths to lead by example by campaigning against the vice, which has allegedly sabotaged the economy of the country.
Nyongesa said the problems of the youths could only be solved by themselves by standing against the vices which have been a menace or them for a number of years.
“We are all aware of the devastating effects of drug abuse and apparently, many of our youths have fallen victim to the vice. We have to work as youths to eradicate drug abuse because no one else can help us solve the problem,” she said.
She urged youths to constitute fora that could help discuss the vice and find expeditious solutions to the menace rather than waiting for well-wishes to solve the problems for them.
“I am of the opinion that if we hold forums perhaps in every of our constituencies to discuss the issue of drugs. Many of our youths are becoming economically redundant because of engaging in drug business and subsequent abuses. We can solve that on our own rather than waiting for help from outside,” she added.
Nyongesa also urged the police to arrest people who allegedly misusing youths by welcoming them to the business.
“But there are cartels who are misusing youths by welcoming them to the business as salesmen. This is the time that the police should act with speed to arrest those making the young generation choose a wrong path but as youths, we have the prime role to save our colleagues by spreading a message against the menace," she said.
