Kisumu West constituency MP Olago Aluoch has challenged the youth to study coxswain to be able to tap the potential in Lake Victoria.
Olago said the lake has the potential to bring employment to a number of young people but only if they get adequate training.
The MP said there are a number of motor boats that cannot be operated due to lack of trained coxswains.
He said the county government of Kisumu has bought a number of boat ambulances that can be used to save fishermen who always drown in the lake but there are no personnel to operate them.
“Motorboats are lying idle because of no trained coxswains let our youth pick this opportunity. Enrol in the marine colleges and take up these jobs,” he said.
Speaking to the youth in his constituency on Wednesday, Olago said in the past there was only one training college for coxswain in Mombasa.
He announced that a retired marine engineer has opened a training college for coxswain in his constituency.
“The school is right here with us, get the required knowledge on how to manage the motor boats, the job is just waiting for you,” he told the youth.
Olago told the youth to grab such opportunity and get adequate training since there is massive employment in the marine sector.
