Two men have been arrested in Kabete, Kikuyu Sub-County for cutting down trees without obtaining a permit.

Speaking in her office on Tuesday, deputy forest officer Ms Esther Nyaguthii, said the two were cutting down trees illegally as they had not obtain any permission from the office.

“A resident within the area reported the matter to the office and when we went to the scene accompanied by police, we found the two cutting the trees thus they were arrested,” said Nyaguthii.

However, she said that four others managed to escape adding that the owner of the land also escaped but police have launched a manhunt as she had not obtained permission to cut the trees.

The forest officer said that despite issuing a warning, some residents were still engaging in the illegal act hence risk being prosecuted.

She emphasised that before cutting down trees, residents should ensure they obtain a permit.

Confirming the incident, the Kikuyu OCPD Mutune Maweu said that land owners were taking advantage of those who cut down trees and use them illegally to perform the act.

He said that such landowners risk being jailed for not following the law.

“Those who cut down trees should ensure their employers have acquired a permit before cutting down the trees,” said Maweu.
