A 25-year-old woman on was Monday charged at the Kisumu law courts for illegally making beer not approved for sale.

Margaret Macharia appeared before Kisumu Chief Magistrate Lucy Gitari to answer charges of illegally preparing and selling local beer when she was arrested in August 14.

According to prosecution, Ms Macharia was arrested in Obunga estate in possession of more than 1,000 liters of local brew.

She was also found in possession of paraphernalia used in making the beer, an indicator she was directly involved in the business prosecution said.

In her defense however, she admitted making the beer but said she did so because she had no alternative source of making a living.

Ms Macharia said she was unemployed and had to provide for her family.

“Liquor was the only viable business I could engage in because I have tried without luck trying to find a formal job, this made me resort to brewing," said Macharia.

She said even though it was wrong to prepare and sell the beer, she had to engage in the business to earn a living and sustain her family.

The court heard that, this was not the first time the accused had been taken to court as she had been arrested before.

She is expected to appear before court in August again.
