People living with albinism now want the government to provide them with a special health insurance.
They claim that they have special needs and hence the government should be able to ensure that they were well catered for in their health.
Speaking during a meeting in Kaptembwa area in Nakuru on Monday, the albinos pointed out that they frequent hospitals for special care and attention hence the need for improved medicare insurance.
“The exposure to direct sunlight puts us at the risk of getting skin cancer. We are often in hospital with wounds which is costly to us and we do not have a source of income,” said Jane Njeri, one of the people living with albinism.
They said that the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) did not cater for their different cases.
“We often fall ill and contract diseases easily due to our condition. We cannot take the same medicine as others since it needs to be special cases. We always find it hard to purchase even skin lotions which is a necessity for us living with albinism. We hope that this can be catered for by the government,” said Joseph Waweru, another member.
They also called on the county government to recognise their presence.
“We would like to also get a special category of tenders in the government and be listed as persons living with disabilities,” said John Mwaura.
