Head teachers in a couple of schools within Athi River Sub-County have since Tuesday been reporting to their institutions as most learners and teachers remain absent.

Athi River Sub county director of education, Joseph Kiema on Friday said that some of the children only turned up for the schools' third term re-opening on Monday but returned home due to the ongoing teachers strike.

"As from Monday this week, children have not reported to school hence no learning is taking place because the head teachers cannot teach children who are absent even though they have consistently stayed put in the schools," said Kiema.

Kiema said all the teachers and children from the 35 public primary and 13 secondary schools from the region have since Monday remained at home.

He said there were however some isolated cases where some schools which included St Agustine Primary School in Mlolongo and Jet View Primary in Githunguri which had their standard eight pupils in school preparing for the upcoming national examinations.

Kiema revealed that a public secondary school within the sub county, had 62 students attending school even though there were no teachers attending to them apart from the head teacher.

"Athi River teachers have not gone to streets like their colleagues in other parts of the country but have paralysed the region's education by remaining at home," said Kiema.

Kiema appealed to teachers from the region to return to work and give the government time to address their grievances.

"Learning has been paralyzed by the ongoing teachers strike, I appeal to the teachers to return to work to save children from suffering especially now in third term when we are preparing for final national examinations," said Kiema.

Kiema warned that the strike would seriously interfere with quality of education and the performance of learners in the national examinations.
