Nakuru County Commissioner Mohammed Birik has refuted claims of looting in the ongoing crackdown of illicit brews in Nakuru County.
Speaking to jornalists from his office on Tuesday, Birik said the crackdown exercise within Nakuru County is being conducted within the confines of the law.
Birik said the exercise is being led by police officers and not a single case of looting has been witnessed.
He said the security personnel will not hesitate to take action against looters and people engaging in vandalism.
“The crackdown on illegal alcohol and brews within Nakuru has not resulted into looting and destruction of property as being reported in some media. The exercise is being conducted within the law,” he said.
Birik said officers have been targeting brews alone and that no property has been looted or destroyed.
He asked the public to allow the police to conduct the raids.
“We appreciate the help of the members of the public but this is a police exercise,” he said.
Birik however asked the public to give information on the whereabouts of suspected brewers.
The Nakuru commissioner said over three million litres of illicit brew have been destroyed within Nakuru County.
He cited Njoro, Gilgil, Subukia, Naivasha, Kuresoi and Molo areas where most brews have been impounded.
Birik also said over 100 people have been arrested in connection to the illegal brews and will be presented in court once investigations are complete.
