Bad roads and faulty bridges in Uasin Gishu County may not be fully attended to before the onset of the predicted El Nino rains.
Speaking on Thursday, Roads and Infrastructure CeC Gideon Birir confirmed that the remaining time before the weatherman’s forecast date on the onset of the long rains is short and little can be possibly done within that period.
“Currently we are trying to look for intervention measures. If we decide that we are going to build a bridge or culvert, with the time we have been told by the meteorological department, we may not be able to complete within enough time to have quality constructions," he said.
"That will only be wasting resources because the rains might carry them away. The only thing we can do is to open the channels to accommodate more water,” he added.
He also confirmed that gabions will be used to build temporary dams to hold water which is expected to flow in excess.
“We will use gabions to install temporary dams to hold water if need be, but for now we are only opening the drainages to avoid any blockages so that water can flow smoothly to the rivers," said the CeC.
