Boda boda operators in Kathiani town in Machakos County on Wednesday held peaceful demonstrations, demanding withdrawal of operating fees imposed by the county government.

About 50 operators rode to the sub County offices in the area, disrupting business operations in the area.

They claimed that Sh1,700 charged per year as parking fee was unreasonable and if implemented would drive them out of business.

Speaking to the press, the operators said they were facing many challenges which were hindering them from earning a living from the business.

The operators' Chairman Mr George Kiema claimed that they were being harassed by police officers who allegedly demand bribes from them from the little they earn.

"We get harassed by some police officers who ask for bribes yet we make very little from this business," Kiema claimed.

Kavindani location chief Mr Antony Kangangi, who is also their patron, calmed them down and assured them that their grievances will be addressed and police officers found guilty of taking bribes are brought to book.

He promised to petition the county government to address the plight of the operators through the area Member of the County Assembly.
