The National Housing Corporation (NHC) is set to demolish 30 housing units at Bondeni estate in Nakuru from Thursday.
Area chief public health officer Mr Samuel Kingori on Monday at his office said that the exercise is necessary due to the poor conditions of the facilities. The occupants received the notice to vacate four weeks ago.
"The roofs are caving in, toilets are full and on the verge of collapsing and the water is not fit for consumption. Due to the cholera outbreak in the area, many people were affected. We want to make sure that this never happens again," he said.
In a letter dated June 2 by the acting NHC Managing Director Gideon Muange, the cooperation warned that it would take legal steps once the 30 day notice expires.
"You shall cater for the cost together with other consequences incidences," read the letter
Flamingo MCA Moses Gichangi has however called on the government to extend the time given to vacate.
"The period is such a short time for someone to be asked to move, considering that some have lived in this houses since their childhood and have even raised their families there. We also appeal that they ensure no one is hurt in the process," said Gichangi in a telephone interview.
Some of the residents however, have vowed to remain in their houses.
"We do not have any other place to shift to. They should at least be considerate and give us a temporary place to keep our households before we get a new place to vacate too," said Henry Maina
