Mekenene MCA Alfayo Ngeresa has been summoned by elders from the region following increasing incidents of insecurity and cattle rustling.
Last week, at least three households lost their cattle to raiders believed to be from the neighbouring Bomet County with three people reportedly fighting for their lives at Kisii General Hospital after being attacked by armed gangsters in a different incident.
The elders on Wednesday summoned the Mr Ngeresa following an alleged delay to table the motion in the county assembly of Nyamira that will declare the region unsafe.
“The rate at which people are losing their livestock through theft and other insecurity incidents is quite alarming and that is why we need the MCA to explain the steps he had taken to discuss the matter in the county government,” said Mr Edwin Ogeto on behalf of the elders.
According to them, Mr Ngeresa had promised to forward the matter to the area MP Ben Momanyi for a discussion at the national assembly since the cattle rustling and insecurity are national issues.
“He knows that it is a bit difficult to access the MP and he has the obligation to forward our matter. It is, therefore, surprising that he hasn’t given us any feedback because this is an issue of national interest,” he added.
He said the issue might escalate if a precaution is not taken and blamed area police officers for failing to give enough security.
“We are involving our MCA because he knows what is happening at the ground. The Chepilat and Matutu police officers are reluctant to help improve security here,” he said.
