Business came to a standstill in Athi River Town on Saturday after US President Barack Obama's arrival in the country on Friday evening.

Residents, most of whom had been waiting for the president's arrival, chose to close their businesses and remain indoors until he leaves the country on Sunday.

"I have been doing business all along, then President Obama is here for three days then he leaves. I cannot miss to follow his movements on the television, reason I have temporarily closed my business," said resident Nancy Mbithe.

Most of those who operate various businesses ranging from kiosks, retail shops, hawkers and those who sell at Athi River open air market chose to remain at home glued to their TV sets or radios.

A spot check in social places within the town noted that most youth had moved from their houses to pubs and bars to follow president Obama's speeches and events on a 3D screen.

George Mutie said he wanted to have ample time with no interruptions as he watched the US president on the screen.

Mutie said the president was a motivation to many young Kenyans following his profile that show he rose from very humble background, in fact 'grass to grace'.

Jecinter Awino resident and owner of a local supermarket within the town on the other hand said to her, it was business as usual.

Awino said she was making lots of sales from the supermarket products since majority of the shops had closed and their owners went on 'Obama' holiday.

Most of the Athi River streets also remained deserted as only scores of people could be spotted going around with their businesses.
