The Nairobi County CeC for Water and Natural Resources Evans Ondieki has raised concern over the increasing cases of vandalism and water theft by individuals who he said are unwilling to pay water bills.
Ondieki blamed the two vices for the frequent water shortages in the area.
"There are several illegal connections of water pipes within Kibera and residents fail to report. There are those who remove the water meters and connect direct pipes to benefit themselves. These are some of the ways that lead to wastage of water and therefore affecting the innocent," said Ondieki as he addressed the media at Kibera Social Grounds on Thursday.
He also revealed that there are cartels within the area that sabotage the efforts of the residents to get water supplied by the Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company.
"There are those cartels running the business of selling water from their boreholes. They block our pipes so that people can buy their water. These people are known by the residents and they should be reported; it is not in order for residents to blame the Nairobi Sewerage and Water Company yet they fail to reveal these activities," said the CeC.
There have been water shortages in various parts of Kibera with DC’s and Bhukungu areas being the most recent areas to be affected.
The residents here have gone without water for close to a month now forcing them to walk long distances in search of the commodity.
