Kiambu county commissioner, Esther Maina has stressed the need for chiefs to sensitize the public on the existing laws towards safeguarding public security.

Speaking during a public baraza in Kiambu town today, Maina said residents should be provided with adequate information to enable them participate in actualizing the concept of community policing.

“When citizens are in the know implementing the ‘Nyumba kumi’ initiative at the village level will be easy since we will already have their support,” she said.

The county commissioner said despite the government having the responsibility to safeguard the public, the people also had an obligation to share and give accurate and useful information to assist the police in containing crime in their respective areas.

She urged that volunteering vital and leading information to security agents was desirable adding that criminals were better known by members of the community in which they were born and live in.

She lamented that more often than not criminals tended to turn against the same people who protect them.

“They attack, rob or even kill them depending on the prevailing circumstances and what they have targeted for stealing,” she said.

However, Maina commended area residents for cooperating and supporting measures put in place to curb lawlessness in the area.
