Managers of charitable children institutions in Mavoko Sub County have been asked to manage them well to realise the objectives for which they were established.
Mavoko children officer Ms Faith Kamau said some of the managers were reportedly mismanaging the institutions thereby violating constitutional rights of children under their custody.
"Some of the homes in Mavoko Sub County are doing well while others have serious issues on how they are run," said Kamau.
The officer, who spoke to the press in her office in Athi River town on Friday, said there is only one public children rescue centre in the entire Machakos County, the Machakos Children Rescue Centre.
She noted that majority of homes that were reportedly mismanaged in the region lack professionalism given that most of the founders and directors had hired their unqualified relatives in highly demanding positions within the institutions.
Kamau said all charitable children institutions in Mavoko should only engage professionals in managerial and resources management positions so that they remain credible.
“All children homes within this region must have individual care plan for the child. If you have the child as an institution, what plan do you have for him or her," remarked Kamau.
Kamau said her office had registered 10 charitable children institutions in Mavoko Sub County and another one in Kathiani Sub County. She warned they would take stun actions on homes which were being mismanaged thereby infringing on rights of the children.
According to Kamau, children homes that were being mismanaged in the regions kept having financial issues and wrangles among their directors.
She said indiscipline, truancy and teenage crisis had also been reported from some of such institutions that lack proper management and professionalism.
