The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has been urged to hold consultations with teachers’ unions before effecting transfers.

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Eldoret West branch executive secretary Kipchumba Arusei accused the commission of transferring teachers arbitrarily without involving the union.

Speaking on Friday during the 7th branch Annual General Meeting Arusei said that though the commission had the mandate to effect transfers, there had been several instances when teacher’s were moved unfairly.

“Some transfers have been punitive and aimed at demoralising teachers,” he said.

Arusei said that the Eldoret West region has a shortage of 410 primary and 570 secondary school teachers adding that with such a shortage consultations were paramount.

"I demand that TSC considers consultations with all education stakeholders before making any movements. Tac tutors in some of our zones will have to face the wrath of the union," he added.

He also called upon the teachers to do away with alcohol saying seven teachers had already been interdicted in the last one year due to alcoholism.

“Teachers’ should be role models of children, not bad examples of recklessness,” he said.

The union leader praised the high courts decision to uphold the decision to award teachers a 50 to 60 percent salary increase
