Residents of Mwongori trading centre in Borabu constituency have urged the Nyamira county government to install street lights in the area to boost security for business operations.

According to them, the region has remained in darkness despite constant promises by the county leadership to fulfill the pledge.

On Sunday, they gave the John Nyagarama-led government an ultimatum of one month to install the lights, failure to which, they would hold demonstrations against the darkness.

“We are very disgusted with the county leadership,"  said Mrs Tinah Moraa.

"The governor has passed through this place and promised to install the lights. We want to continue doing businesses for prosperity because it’s important that our people are empowered through business.”

They said street lights will also reduce the rising incidents of insecurity in the region, in which a number of traders have reputedly lost property and cash to robbers.

“The lights will not only help us to extend the time designated for doing business but also help us avert incidents of insecurity. A number of traders have been robbed at night and efforts to tame the robbers have been futile,” added Mr Kepha Ombong’i.

Their plea was supported by area MCA Alfayo Mwongeresa, who asked the county leadership to honor a motion that had been apparently passed by Nyamira County assembly members.

“This is a thing of the past and I really wonder why it has taken long for the county government to implement it. We agreed that all trading centres should be well lit,” he said.
