A section of Obunga slums residents are accusing the Kisumu County government of doing nothing in the area in regards to El Nino rains preparation.

According to the locals, the area is likely to suffer from the effects of the rains as infrastructure in the area is poor and there is no sign of a solution.

Speaking on Thursday in the area, the residents said drainage is their main worry as there are no water drainage channels in the area, which usually leads to stagnation and with El Nino coming, the situation is set to worsen.

"Whenever it rains in this area, water always stays stagnant on the road for a long time, and we hear El Nino is coming. The situation will get worse because of this poor drainage," said Paul Ongwor, a resident.

"When the county government repaired the main road in this area, they never considered the drainage system. We have been suffering for long and we thought with El Nino coming, this problem will be solved but it seems unlikely," said Peter Mrema, a resident.

The locals are concerned that when it will begin raining, infections will be higher considering that they live in informal structures that might not be able to keep off water. Poor sanitation conditions are also a concern to the locals.

They are calling on the Kisumu County government to act before it is too late.
