Residents in Bosamaro Ward in Nyamira County have called on the county government to upgrade Igena Itambe hospital so to improve access to medical services.

Area residents led by a village elder Dan Nyasani said they have been travelling for long distances Nyamira town to seek services that cant be offered at the local hospital, and now want the county administration to allocate more funds to improve services at the facility.

The residents claimed the hospital was facing numerous challenges such as staff shortages and lack of proper equipment, which they said had adversely affected service delivery.

Nyasani said currently the facility has only 10 trained nurses manning four departments in the maternity wing and called for hiring of additional personnel.

“The hospital serves large catchment area and we ask those in charge of health and sanitation in the county to ensure that the hospital is well-equipped and has enough staff,” said Nyasani.

Bosamaro Ward Representative Boniface Ombori said he has written a letter to the county health department over the worrying stae of affairs at the hospital and was waiting for a response.

The county with a population of 650,676 is served by 130 health care facilities; 81 public, 16 faith-based and 33 private.
