Uasin Gishu County government will this week launch Sh30 million programme aimed at urging youths to venture into agriculture.
Speaking in his office on Monday, Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago said the Kijana na Acre programme targets jobless youths with university and college education to venture into agriculture to earn income.
This, he added, will help the youth stay in the rural areas instead of moving to towns and cities in search of white-collar jobs which are scarce.
"My government has set aside Sh30 million for the programme to be rolled out this week. It is meant to empower youth to venture into agriculture by giving them loans to practice farming. The loan will be repaid after harvesting the crop,” he said.
He reiterated that the programme will also see youth undergo training on farming methods and fertiliser to improve yield.
"I urge youth to join groups in large numbers for them to benefit from the fund since the amount will only be channeled to accounts of youths who are in groups. Youths should venture into agriculture since it’s one of the remedies to joblessness," he added.
